Island Caretaker’s agreement

This agreement sets out the terms which, upon acceptance, confirm your participation as an island caretaker on Viirelaiu.
No separate signing of the agreement will take place. By selecting “I agree to the terms of the agreement,” we consider the agreement signed.

1. Period and Contacts

  • Caretaker period: (chosen period from Saturday to Saturday)
  • Contact person: Karen Tiitus, +372 581 414 84
  • Sharing photos and videos with Kersti Lauk via WhatsApp, +372 588 024 55

2. Price

  • €1500 for two people – includes round-trip boat transport to Viirelaid
  • You may also come alone – the price is the same, and so is the experience.

3. Transport

  • Departure from Virtsu harbor takes place on Saturday at 13:00 (please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure).
  • Arrival at the island is every Saturday, and the return trip also takes place on Saturday.
  • Return from the island is around 13:30 — weather dependent (please be on the pier at least 10 minutes earlier).
  • At that time, the “handover” to the next caretakers will also take place.
  • Transport is arranged by the boatman from Virtsu.
  • Transport cost is included in the price.

4. Island Life and Duties

  • The island is entirely at the caretakers’ disposal for the week. Please note that occasionally workers may be present for short periods if urgent repairs are needed.
❗️ Up to 6 caretakers may be on the island at the same time. The aim is to create new friendships, develop cooperation, and enrich the island experience.
  • Preparing meals, heating the house, and daily upkeep are the caretaker’s responsibility.
  • Dishwashing and daily cleaning of rooms.
  • Use of mobile phones: Your own SIM card should be left at Virtsu harbor, as there is one island phone with a scheduled internet connection (like supervised use 😃).
The island phone has WhatsApp installed. You can take pictures and videos with it, and during the internet hours, you can communicate and share them with Kersti Lauk.
    ⛔️ Internet is available daily from 17:30 – 18:30.
Why bring your own phone at all? You can still capture photos and videos for your own memories.

5. Accommodation

  • Caretakers are accommodated in rooms in the main house.

6. Content Creation Expectations

Caretakers must send via WhatsApp each day, no later than 18:30 (at least one caretaker may do so):

  • at least 1 photo and/or video,
  • a short daily summary (as text).

Photos/videos and the summary should be sent to Kersti Lauk.

❗️ Additionally, to make things more exciting, we will occasionally give you tasks to complete on the island (followers of the Viirelaiu page suggest ideas, and we choose the coolest ones 🤩). You won’t know in advance when tasks will come. If one is given, Kersti will notify you in the morning via WhatsApp, and it must be completed the same day.

7. Life on the Island – Conditions

  • Food and drinking water: must be brought by yourselves. NB:There is no fridge.
  • Washing: shower in the main house.
  • The island has electricity provided by a diesel generator. Use of the generator is subject to a separate fee – €10 per hour. After your stay, a payment link will be sent based on the hours used.
  • Bed linen: please bring your own (blankets and pillows are provided).
  • ⛔️ Firewood is available for purchase on Viirelaid: €3.75 per bag. After your stay, a payment link will be sent based on the number of bags used.
  • Average firewood consumption during heating season:
    • 3 bags per day, more in cold winter (for room + living room),
    • plus 4–5 bags for heating the sauna.
  • Additional equipment: power banks (preferably several) for charging phone and camera. Headlamps, flashlights, and candles for evening reading.
  • Clothing: we recommend gear as if going to Alaska (warm jacket, socks, hat, slippers — floors may be cold — rubber boots, etc.). Weatherproof clothing is the best choice.

You may also bring some carrots 🥕 for the island’s animals (they will definitely come to greet you).

8. Cleanliness and Environment

  • All rooms must be left in the same condition as upon arrival — treat it like your own home.
  • All trash must be taken back to the mainland.

9. Liability

  • The caretaker acts at their own risk and agrees to follow the island’s rules.
  • The Viirelaiu team is not responsible for any accidents or personal belongings damaged or lost during your stay.
  • For intentional damage to or loss of island property, all caretakers present are held jointly responsible. After assessing damages, a financial claim will be sent.
  • If anything breaks on the island, you must immediately notify Karen or Kersti (contacts above).

10. Acceptance

By ticking the box or pressing the button “I agree to the terms of the agreement,” you confirm that:

  • You have read the terms of this agreement,
  • You agree to comply with them,
  • You confirm your participation as an island caretaker during the agreed period.

⛔️ If, for any reason (such as illness), you cannot come to the island during your chosen period, the fee will not be refunded, but another period will be arranged for your stay.

Enjoy your time on the island!
The Viirelaiu Team 🌊
